As part of an effort to make NPCs feel like real people (that can give you side quests and have more meaningful and varied dialogue with multiple choices), an AI rework would go a long way and it would also make the core gameplay more entertaining and interesting. The ideal Pokemon game should make you feel like you're going against real NPCs, and not like every route in the game is just a gauntlet of random wild Pokemon taking turns in spamming random moves in a panic. Not only does it feel completely random and predictable at the same time (only using healing items when very low on health, often selecting random moves), it poses near zero challenge for any player above the age of 8 years old. The enemy trainer AI in Pokemon games has always been a letdown.
